Tylee Craft, UNC Wide Receiver, Passes Away at 23 After Brave Battle with Lung Cancer
Tylee Craft, a wide receiver for the University of North Carolina (UNC) football team, tragically passed away at the age of 23 following a courageous two-year battle with lung cancer. Diagnosed with stage 4 large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in March 2022, Craft’s journey was characterized by incredible strength and resilience. Although he stepped away from active play, he remained a vital part of the Tar Heels, inspiring teammates and fans with his unwavering spirit. In recognition of his bravery, Craft was awarded the 2022 Disney Spirit Award, celebrating the most inspirational college football player.
Craft’s diagnosis of this rare form of lung cancer shocked many, especially since lung cancer is typically uncommon in non-smokers and young athletes. He faced his illness with remarkable courage, becoming a symbol of perseverance within the sports community. The diagnosis followed persistent chest pain experienced during practice, leading doctors to reveal the severity of his condition. Throughout numerous treatments, Craft maintained a positive outlook, sharing his journey with fans via social media. His story resonated not just with teammates but also throughout the entire college football community.
A standout recruit from Sumter, South Carolina, Craft joined the Tar Heels in 2020. Over his two seasons with the team, he played in eight games, contributing as both a wide receiver and on special teams. While his time on the field was cut short, his impact extended beyond statistics. His spirit inspired teammates to remain resilient, prompting UNC to create the #TyleeStrong campaign to rally support for Craft and raise awareness about cancer.
On October 12, 2024, UNC announced Craft’s passing, with head coach Mack Brown sharing the news during a postgame conference following the Tar Heels’ loss to Georgia Tech. “This young man fought so hard for his two and a half years,” Brown said. “The doctors told us he outlived what he should’ve. And he did it with spirit, with a smile on his face; he didn’t miss a meeting, didn’t miss practice, and coached these incredible young people.”
